Together, we can lead

25 Jan

“Everybody can be great… because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
– Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I held a day of service at The Education Partnership for 44 University of Pittsburgh students. The volunteers were energetic, willing and accomplished so much!

Overall, they sorted and folded 7 pallets or approximately 10,000 t-shirts for the students we serve. They also organized and sorted 14 pallets of donated construction paper to prepare for distribution.

100_0645During a lunch break, a coworker (and a 2nd year Ally!) suggested I share the above Martin Luther King Jr. quote to reflect on the importance of staying active and serving in our communities. It was a moment of reflection for me as well.

100_0634I loved how each and every one of the volunteers had their own story and vision. Future artists, engineers, doctors, lawyers… They all had their own experiences, passions and differences, yet they were all their for the same reason: to serve.

This also sums up Public Allies quite well.

Awesome quote! And nice post, I think a lot of the times people get caught up in the notion that to be a leader means to be out front and in charge, but leadership as service is just as important.
